La Leona Petrified Forest is a full-day tour that visits an area of the Patagonian steppe located between El Calafate and Chaltén, aimed at those who love outdoor activities and adventure.
Firstly, passengers will be picked up at their respective hotels to begin their journey to La Leona. During the first part of this journey you will see Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz River, Lake Viedma, and the La Leona River. It will also be possible to obtain a wonderful panoramic view of the Andes Mountains, including Mount Fitz Roy.
Continuing with the tour, at the beginning of the route towards the petrified forest and Los Hornos hill, you will be able to see for the first time the enormous depression in the ground where the petrified logs and fossils are.
During much of the trekking you will see a large number of petrified logs lying on the surface, testimony to ancient times where the climate was very different from the current one and allowed the existence of a full forest. It will also be possible to observe and discover fossil remains of different types of dinosaurs.
Because the petrified forest is located in a natural depression in the terrain and next to Cerro Los Hornos, it is protected from the wind. There, the climatic conditions are very good, thus facilitating the exploration of the
zone.
At the end of the walk, you will return to the Parador La Leona to close the tour. You will then be transferred to your lodging place in El Calafate, with the witness of having experienced the sighting of the vestiges of the Cretaceous period and its tectonic movements.
