Very good agency for the excursion to El Chalten, to discover Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. The minibus came to pick us up directly at our accommodation, although it was not a hotel. Pleasant guide who made the effort to speak slowly in Spanish so that we could follow the explanations. Two short walks to reach the belvedere facing Fitz Roy, then to discover a waterfall near El Chalten (a little less interesting for the latter.) I recommend this agency.
The guide was very kind, he explained to us everything from the formation of glaciers, etc. When we started the snowmobile tour, they were always attentive, the attention was magnificent.
We believe adventures can be exciting and responsible at the same time. That’s why we promote environmental care by developing tourist experiences that respect and protect the natural surroundings.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions: Your quick guide to planning a trip to El Calafate
Here we answer clearly and directly the questions every traveler has. Planning your adventure in Patagonia starts with the right information.
Trip Planning
What is the best time to travel to El Calafate?
The best time is during the austral summer, from December to March, when the days are longer and the temperatures warmer, ideal for outdoor activities. However, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are also excellent options with fewer crowds and unique landscapes. The weather in Patagonia is unpredictable, so we always recommend coming prepared for all four seasons in one day.
How many days do I need to see the essentials of El Calafate?
We recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 full days to enjoy the main attractions without rushing. This allows you to dedicate a full day to the Perito Moreno Glacier (walkways and some navigation or trekking), another day for a navigation to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, and a third day for an excursion to El Chaltén or a Patagonian estancia experience.
How much time do I need to visit El Calafate?
The recommended length of stay to visit El Calafate and enjoy its main attractions is at least 3 or 4 days. This will allow you to take the most popular tours, such as the mini trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier and the navigation through the channels of Lake Argentino. If you have more time, you can also do activities around El Calafate, such as visiting tourist estancias and 4×4 crossings to the Frías and Huyliche hills.
What clothes should I bring for the excursions?
Without a doubt, walking on the ice of the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most outstanding experiences. For this, you can choose to experience the Minitrekking or Big Ice. If you come with your family and one of the members does not meet the required age for these activities, then you could opt for the tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier Walkways with the optional navigation in the Canal de los Témpanos, in front of the north face of the glacier.
For another full day, you should visit the glaciers of the Northern Arm of Lake Argentino, the Spegazzini and Upsala glaciers. To see them, it is necessary to book a full-day navigation, Glaciares Gourmet or Todo Glaciares.
Also, you cannot miss that very close to El Calafate is Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and their neighboring peaks, located in El Chaltén, the ‘national capital of trekking’. Calafate Tours takes you to this mountain village, with the possibility of enjoying wonderful trekking and navigation activities.
And if you still want to learn more about the city of El Calafate, our agency has several options to visit estancias and enjoy various outdoor activities. In that case, it is worth experiencing the Nativo Experience, Calafate Night tours, or embarking on a 4×4 journey to Cerro Frías.
Our Excursions
What is the difference between the Minitrekking and the Big Ice on the Perito Moreno Glacier?
Both are walks on the glacier, but they differ in duration and physical demand: Minitrekking: It is a walk of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes on the ice. It is of medium difficulty and suitable for people from 8 to 65 years old. Ideal for a first experience. Big Ice: It is a more demanding experience of 3 and a half hours on the ice, exploring deeper formations of the glacier. It requires better physical condition and is for people from 18 to 50 years old.
Which navigation excursion suits me best: Todo Glaciares or Glaciares Gourmet?
Both navigations explore the impressive glaciers of the Northern Arm of Lake Argentino, but they have key differences: Todo Glaciares: Focuses on the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, with a landing at the base of the Spegazzini to walk along a trail. It does not include lunch. Glaciares Gourmet: It is a premium experience on a more exclusive cruise. In addition to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, it sails in front of the north face of the Perito Moreno and includes a gourmet lunch on board.
Are there excursions for all ages and physical conditions?
Yes! We offer a wide variety of experiences. For a family-friendly adventure with low difficulty, we recommend the Nativo Experience or the Safari Azul, which have no significant age restrictions. For those seeking adrenaline, we offer trekking and kayaking. Each tour on our site details its level of difficulty and its restrictions.
Reservations and Payments
Do I need to book the excursions in advance?
Yes, it is highly recommended, especially if you travel during high season (December to March). El Calafate is a very popular destination and the spots for excursions, especially for Minitrekking and Big Ice, are limited and sell out weeks in advance. Booking online guarantees your place.
What payment methods do you accept? Do you offer installments?
We accept various payment methods, including credit and debit cards. We make your trip easier by offering financing alternatives that allow you to pay for your excursions in convenient installments. You can check the available options during the purchase process on our website.
Is the entrance fee to Los Glaciares National Park included in the price?
No, the entrance fee to Los Glaciares National Park is not included in the price of the excursions. It must be purchased separately and in advance on the official website of the National Parks Administration. We will provide you with the link and all the necessary information at the time of your booking.
